這句歌詞一直以來都飽受爭議，也讓人高舉問號，英國曾讓 2000 位成年人票選他們認為很怪的歌詞，而 The Killers 的歌 Humans 裡的這句 " Are we human, or are we dancer ? " 得到了最怪歌詞第一名。

這句歌詞到底想表達什麼 ? 一個奇怪的問句讓眾人衍生出更多的問號，而大家的答案也不盡相同。

樂團主唱，也是為這首歌作詞的人 Brandon Flowers 曾表示，這句歌詞的靈感來自 Hunter S. Thompson ( 美國非主流記者、作家 )，他曾說美國正在

｢養育一個舞者的世代，害怕跨出一步到界線外｣
(raising a generation of dancers, afraid to take one step out of line)

讓人解讀這句歌詞應該是想表達: 我們不該像被操縱的舞者或人偶
(puppet) 一樣被禁錮在世俗規範下，而是要活出人類真正的樣子，作自己、享受自由。依這個解讀的方向，問題的答案會是: 要做人類 (human)，不要做舞者 (dancer)。

不過，也有人提出不同的看法，認為答案是｢舞者｣ (dancer) 才對，認為做為人類要符合社會框架，而舞者才是真正舞出自我的那一群人，所以要做自由自在的舞者。

這句歌詞可以是很富有哲學深度的一個提問 (還有這首歌裡其他句歌詞)，激發人去思考存在的意義，以及自我和群體之間的關係，但有沒有可能，這句話就只是像是你朋友某天突然喝茫了，然後隨口吐出一句沒有邏輯的問題 ? 然後搞得大家滿頭問號。

這句話另一個受爭議的問題是｢文法｣，正確來說應該要加 s 變複數: " Are we humans, or are we dancers ? " 才是正確的，不過這也正是這句話暗藏玄機之處，如果你這麼受文法｢規範｣，那是不是也反映在你的生活態度 ? 當文法魔人群起激憤要求要加 s 時，另一群自由分子語帶輕鬆說: Don't be so serious !
