Cavetown 翻唱的這首 Paul，其原唱是 Big Thief ( 大盜賊 )，他們是一支來自紐約布魯克林的美國獨立民謠樂隊。其實原唱也非常好聽，是由樂團主唱
Adrianne Lenker 演唱，只是我一開始是聽到翻唱的版本。這首歌的旋律和曲風乍聽之下蠻溫馨、溫暖平靜的，但是歌詞的意境卻不是那麼回事。

歌詞中的女子無法和名叫 Paul 的人相愛，倒也不是不喜歡、不愛這個人，而是懷疑自己是否有愛一個人的能力。女子過去可能有不好的經歷或創傷，而無法給予承諾，即便 Paul 向她保證會無條件地接納她，但她最終還是認為自己是不值得被愛，又或者沒有能力去愛 (See, you're gentle, baby, I couldn't
stay/I'd only bring you pain)。

從歌詞中也能感覺到，兩人在一起時，是慢慢走向毀滅 (I'll be your killer in a thriller and the cause of our death)。即使想要努力去愛對方，但是碰在一起時，卻常常一起沉浸在酒精當中，兩個人在一起，是拖累彼此，最後還是只能放手。

Paul 帶出個人內心掙扎、矛盾的心境，敘事者以個人的觀點來看待自己與
Paul 的關係，不禁疑惑這兩個人是真的不適合彼此嗎? 還是只是女子無法對任何人敞開心胸，無法展示自己脆弱的一面，也無法相信對方會接住自己
(there was no one who could kiss away my shit)。這種想好好愛一個人，卻又封閉自我的矛盾，讓人感到可惜、遺憾。
